25 Things I Have Been Busy Doing That Have Prevented Me From Blogging

The B word.

No. Not that one. The other one. The really, really, really, horrible one.

Yeah. That one. You guessed it.

BUSY!!

None of us can escape it these days it seems and so I thought maybe instead of apologizing for it or for not blogging consistently I would swing by and post something off the cuff with zero apologies for people who don’t understand and with the confidence that most of you are in the same boat and will absolutely be able to relate.

Also, because we are all very busy, I have decided that a numbered list is the most efficient way to share what it is I want to say. A list is so much easier to digest, right? (I mean BuzzFeed is practically 100%  made up of listicles and BuzzFeed would never steer us wrong.)

So without further ado, I give you ~

25 Things I Have Been Busy Doing That Have Prevented Me From Blogging

(I may need to work on the name of the list. Meh. I’ll worry about that later.)

  1. Being consumed by the news of the world.
  2. Worrying about blogging.
  3. Worrying about not blogging.
  4. Eating too many carbs.
  5. Worrying about eating too many carbs.
  6. Missing lunch dates with dear friends.
  7. Worrying about missing lunch dates with dear friends.
  8. Missing coffee dates with some of my favourite people.
  9. Trying to find time to organize coffee dates with some of my favourite people.
  10. Worrying about never having coffee dates with some of my favourite people ever again.
  11. Trying to build a business.
  12. Worrying about building a business.
  13. Wondering who the heck I think I am that I can build a business.
  14. Worrying about why I don’t think I have what it takes to build a business. I do. Shut up brain!
  15. Working online all the time. All. The. Time.
  16. Worrying about working online so much.
  17. Not exercising.
  18. Not eating well.
  19. Forgetting to take my iron.
  20. Worrying about why my iron is low.
  21. Being tired.
  22. See number 19. Derp.
  23. Over promising and under delivering.
  24. Worrying about letting *everybody* down *all* the time.
  25. Flipping rapidly back and forth between ALL THE FOMO and considering hermitage as a valid lifestyle.

I have limited my list to 25 things because I know you’re busy, too. Who has time to read 26 things?!? Slackers! That’s who! (I’m considerate like that.) This list could easily have 100 things.

I have one husband and two children. A lot of my busy is for them and/or because of them. I know I’m not the only one delivering the occasional lunch to school, but waiting for nearly 30 minutes for a kid to come and fetch it might be a uniquely me experience. (This week. Grr. I was so annoyed. Totally learned a new thing, though. Apparently, High School lets out at 12:30 for lunch. Mmhm. It’s nearly the end of November, you’d think maybe someone might have mentioned that by now, but you’d be wrong.)

Anyhoo …

Life, right?

So, before I can think myself out of hitting publish I’m going to hit publish.

How has your Fall been? Are you also suffering from the B word?

How are you handling the news of the world?

Do you have a surefire remedy for wanting/not wanting simultaneously to do ALL the things?

Feel free to mull those questions over (and to post answers in the comment section!) while enjoying one of my favourite busy day mindworms.

December Has Been A Blur

Christmas lights music piano sadness blues

This month has flown by and I admit I feel a little bit overwhelmed.

I am finally getting what I want in many ways, and yet I am feeling like a failure because I didn’t have time to do a lot of the fun leading-up-to-Christmas stuff that we usually do.

Right now, as I type, I am having a horrible case of the guilts.

I hate guilt. Hate it. It’s useless. It’s as bad as shame. As a matter of fact, Shame can take a flying leap hand-in-hand with Guilt off the tallest cliff they can find. They need to go away. Seriously.

I am doing the best that I can.

What if it isn’t good enough?

It feels like it isn’t good enough, right now, and that – let me tell you – stinks.

I am here with two kids on their first official day off from school. I should (ugh.. Should might need to grab the ankle of Shame as it starts the decent from that cliff.) be doing something fun with my kids.

What am I doing?

I am ruminating about things I cannot change.

I am worrying about something that is beyond late that should have been done in November and of letting people down.

I am wondering when I will figure out how to be in three places at once and make all those places the happiest places ever.

I am being stupid because none of my rumination, worry or wonder can possibly make everything perfect.

AND! OH MY DEAR SWEET LORD! Perfect better be the pilot of the leap from that stOOpid cliff because it is the WORST!

Why do I do this to myself?

I know I am not the only one. I know that this, the most wonderful time of the year, can be a challenge to anyone at any given time. I know people are far from family and want to be near or they are near to family and would love to be anywhere but there.

No one has all the answers.

I know this to be true.

I do.

But what I wouldn’t give to be able to control it all.

I would be the merriest of festive fascists, ever!

Everyone would get what they want and need and no one would be without.

Not happiness, or health, or love, or food, or family, or friends, or festivity.

It would be – oh, I hate to say it – perf- NO! I refuse.

It would be ideal.

In the meantime, this is today’s soundtrack.

Now please excuse me, while I continue my annual ugly cry at my desk.

It’s okay. I’ll be fine.

Mr. Rogers was onto something. Crying really does get the sad out of you.

So, tell me, how are you holding up?

I know I am not alone. I never am, really.

Go ahead. Let it out.

The One Where There Is A Friends Reference

old friends long time grow

After approximately 87,000* Facebook messages we** managed to go out to dinner and as expected it was fabulous!

Dinner Divas

I could go on and on about my friends and my night out, but you would have no point of reference, so I thought I would keep it extremely succinct.

We grew up (okay, okay, we were in our 20s and some of us were married already. Whatever!) at a time when coffee shops were novel and everyone wanted a shebob just like Rachel’s, so sometimes we reference these things.

Tonight our conversations were all over the place. Have you ever overheard four friends who are also mothers having a conversation across a table? It’s quite remarkable, really. We zig. We zag. We share insight. We reminisce. We listen. We lament. We give advice. We offer support. We celebrate successes. We feel comfortable sharing stories – loudly.

What I am saying is you wouldn’t have over heard us. You simply would have heard us!

We also have a knack for witty remarks and pop culture references and that leads me to Friends.

Friends Ross Rachel Monica Chandler Phoebe Joey

At one point (and completely apropos of nothing) a conversation about crows turned into a conversation about birds that mate for life which then led to – wait for it – lobsters!

Because LOGICAL!

*Slight exaggeration.

**Four friends from high school – which was a lifetime ago – getting together once a month to vent, dish, and laugh. So much laughing!

Sweet Sunflower Snacks (A Pictorial Snack Tutorial)

Did you know you can cut an apple almost all the way through, pop out the core, let the flower petals fall open, then add a dollop of peanut butter and a few mini chocolate chips, to make a delicious and nutritious sunflower?

You can!

See?

Isn’t that fun? It is a favourite around here, especially in Fall, when the Nova Scotian apples are at their absolute best. Delicious!

Easy, right?

Totally.

You can use what you like best, of course, but I tend to use a Golden Delicious Apple, Natural Peanut Butter*, and gluten free mini chocolate chips. You only need a few chocolate chips. They are chocolate chips! They seem to have a magical power over kids. If they find 2 in a mini muffin they’re thrilled, so I just go with what I have worked so hard to achieve. Happiness!

So, what do you think? Do you think your kids would like to try a Sweet Sunflower Snack?

I am willing to bet they would.

What is your favourite snack food? Do your kids have special snacks after school?

Let’s talk about it!

If you give this a try, I’d love to hear what you think.

Oh, just one more thing! I nearly forgot!!

Look!

It’s a teeny tiny Thing 2 enjoying a Sweet Sunflower Snack a few years ago! Aww!

IMG_2880

This small Corelle bowl might be the ideal serving dish for this snack. Notice how it helps the apple slices keep the flower shape, while containing the Peanut Butter? That’s better than the larger plate for presentation. (Though the larger plate was best for an after school snack with extra Things!) I also like the mix of white chocolate and dark chocolate chips here. It seems more flower-like, to me.

*Of course, if you have a peanut allergy you can use another nut butter or a soy butter in its place. Still yummy!

Get Out The Vote!

Map of Canada

Tomorrow is Election Day!

I am so excited!

I can’t wait to cast my ballot and then wait and see the results from riding after riding after riding come pouring in.

We always take our kids and talk about it a LOT leading up to the election. As you can imagine, my Things are pretty well versed at this point because it has been 77 days since the election was called. Tomorrow will be day 78 and every single day has involved a conversation about what Canada means to us. We can’t wait!

It matters.

It matters to me and it should matter to you.

I love this country and I have great hope for its future.

I know you have heard it a bazillion times over the past few months, but please, oh, please, oh, please go and exercise your right to vote tomorrow. The polls are open for 12 hours. That is a long time. Make sure you take the time to go and cast your ballot.

There are people in this world who would die for this right that we so often take for granted.

Think about that.

There are women who fought in this country for this right. It wasn’t all that long ago. It is shamefully recent history if you really think about it. Do not disrespect them by disregarding what they laid their lives on the line to accomplish.

They fought for you and me.

They gave us the right.

It is yours.

Exercise it.

Here’s a helpful video!

Once you vote and pat yourself on the back for taking part in the direction your own country takes, you will want to find out about the race and who is winning it. Who is doing well in your riding? Did your candidate win? Is your chosen party getting new seats in Ottawa? It’s all so exciting! You just want to know!

How will you know?

There are so many ways!

You will absolutely be hearing election coverage on radio and television both locally and Nationally. It will pretty much be unavoidable! Yay!

Here is another helpful tool from Elections Canada!

Since I am an avid Twitter user, I will definitely be following along on Twitter. You can follow Elections Canada here.

Essentially, the only way to not hear about the election on Monday October 19, 2015 would be to bury your head in the sand. And you don’t want to do that, now, do you? I mean, you’ll be in the dark and you will have sand in your ears. And that just sounds awful! * shudders *

Since we are all on Social Media why not go ahead and pledge to vote and show it? You can change your profile pictures! Check this out! Fun!

Okay! So we are ALL voting right?

Cool!

I knew I liked you guys!

Let’s do this!

So tell me, did you already vote? Will you vote tomorrow? Are you as excited as I am? Are you taking your kids with you? Will you be following along on social media and waiting to hear the exciting news at the end of the night?

I know I won’t be alone.

Twitter will be all, well – a twitter – with politics.

I hope to tweet you there!

AFTER you vote!

On The Double!

two-695282_1280

Okay, okay. I know. I know.

I promised a post every day all month, but you know what? I simply couldn’t deliver one every single day, in order, on the actual day. The actual days were jam packed with events, meetings, planning sessions, absolutely-have-to-be-present school related stuff, a fun dinner date on a Saturday night to meet new people and reconnect with special friends, a narrowly avoided parenting sit’i’ation, an awesome launch of an awesome national program, drop-offs, pickups, and mix-ups, musical instrument acquiring, a whole heck of a lot of form filling, and I even managed to somehow squeeze in a lot of extra hugs, get two gigantic yellow Fall Mums,  and have a coffee date with some of my peeps and a couple of tweeps who are now included in my #tweepstopeeps people I have met in real life (IRL).

I will however reimburse you with an equal number of posts by month’s end because, as I have said before, you just don’t show up with a problem. When you are able to do so, you show up with a solution (or two), too!

Welcome to my solution!

My last post was Friday, September 18. It was a photo post because by then the pressure of September was already starting to squeeze me like a Boa Constrictor. Oh well. At least I know better than to stress myself out over a blog post – for Tempered With Kindness.

Oh, I totally stress out over blog posts for other people’s blogs – like, 13 revisions and a near panic attack over photographs stress out, followed by a sanity-stealing screen shot scenario that really was quite the comedy of errors (that I am still not quite sure has worked itself out – whoopsiedoodle!). Thank goodness no one is here at my desk with me as I am giving a colourful language peppered, colour commentary on just exactly why computers are the ruination of all good things in the world.

Ha ha! Hee hee! No worries. All in good fun! I feel much better now.

You have to go through it to get through it and all that jazz …

Anyway, here I am. I am going to post this and then I will somehow post another. I am not sure the second one will be posted tonight, but by the end of September I will be all caught up. I will! I know I can do it.

I hope your September is going well!

Let’s catch up soon!

How has your month been going?

Are you Crazy-Busy?

How are you handling it all?

*Never Google images of the phrase “double header”. You’re just going to have to trust me on this point. Scarred for life, I am!

**Does every single blog post really require an image? Really?!

Peak Performance Day: Dance Edition

8641978629_4a61a0cb16_o

Sometimes bloggers like to talk about music (some of us a bit more than others) and when two people who happen to love the same tune find each other, well, it’s a bloggy goodness match made in heaven!

A while back, Becky – Hi Bitsy! – over at A Little Bit of MomSense began sharing what she called “song obsessions”. Well, I was all over that because it is very happy-making to learn that a person you enjoy in the Twitterverse is really that cool/nice/kind/friendly IRL (or as close to RL as we can get – for now!) Facebook is not quite IRL, but it can be close, especially when people are themselves and not trying to make everything all shiny and perfect. Becky is one of these real people.

Her last song obsession (or two) was different. For once I wasn’t totally in agreement. I loved one and the other, well, the other I felt wasn’t the best offering from Flo and her machine. In fact, I had moved right past “What Kind of Man” (which I found … umm … yell-y) onto “Ship to Wreck” because I feel it is truly Flo at her best.

So I am here to share it … and a few others … with you and Bitsy. I hope everyone enjoys this random, Peak Performance Day, dance party.

Florence + The Machine = Awesome

Said the Whale -live no less!

And here is the recorded version I dance to on the regular at Chez Peady.

Okay, I can’t really explain why I love this one so much, but I love it! It’s so groovy and melancholy and yet boppy all at once. The refrain “don’t think I could forgive you” over and over through a myriad of scenarios makes it a pretty rad “forget you”, don’t you think? Forgive me the ahem full moon in the video, but hey it’s already so odd you might never even get there. Wait. Did I just intrigue you into watching the whole thing? Tee hee hee. Please enjoy Lilly Wood & The Prick and Robin Schulz “Prayer In C”.

This Jimmy Eat World song is very catchy and I really love it. I feel like I have been hearing it for many years and that’s because I have, but it seems to get fairly regular airplay, here in Halifax, on one of my favourite radio stations Radio 96.5 FM and every time I hear it I find a new reason to enjoy it. It’s happy-making. The last time I heard it I decided to dig a bit deeper and when I read more about it’s origin I liked it even more. Here’s “The Middle”.

And for awesome, if not obvious, reasons I leave you with this bonus tune from the Foo Fighters, who clearly are amazing human beings as well as musicians.

So there you have it. These are the mind worms that have invaded my brain of late.

I hope you enjoy them.

What songs are on a permanent loop in your brain or on your playlist lately?

Go ahead and share with me in the comments. You can even add a link to your favourites!
