25 Things I Have Been Busy Doing That Have Prevented Me From Blogging

The B word.

No. Not that one. The other one. The really, really, really, horrible one.

Yeah. That one. You guessed it.

BUSY!!

None of us can escape it these days it seems and so I thought maybe instead of apologizing for it or for not blogging consistently I would swing by and post something off the cuff with zero apologies for people who don’t understand and with the confidence that most of you are in the same boat and will absolutely be able to relate.

Also, because we are all very busy, I have decided that a numbered list is the most efficient way to share what it is I want to say. A list is so much easier to digest, right? (I mean BuzzFeed is practically 100%  made up of listicles and BuzzFeed would never steer us wrong.)

So without further ado, I give you ~

25 Things I Have Been Busy Doing That Have Prevented Me From Blogging

(I may need to work on the name of the list. Meh. I’ll worry about that later.)

  1. Being consumed by the news of the world.
  2. Worrying about blogging.
  3. Worrying about not blogging.
  4. Eating too many carbs.
  5. Worrying about eating too many carbs.
  6. Missing lunch dates with dear friends.
  7. Worrying about missing lunch dates with dear friends.
  8. Missing coffee dates with some of my favourite people.
  9. Trying to find time to organize coffee dates with some of my favourite people.
  10. Worrying about never having coffee dates with some of my favourite people ever again.
  11. Trying to build a business.
  12. Worrying about building a business.
  13. Wondering who the heck I think I am that I can build a business.
  14. Worrying about why I don’t think I have what it takes to build a business. I do. Shut up brain!
  15. Working online all the time. All. The. Time.
  16. Worrying about working online so much.
  17. Not exercising.
  18. Not eating well.
  19. Forgetting to take my iron.
  20. Worrying about why my iron is low.
  21. Being tired.
  22. See number 19. Derp.
  23. Over promising and under delivering.
  24. Worrying about letting *everybody* down *all* the time.
  25. Flipping rapidly back and forth between ALL THE FOMO and considering hermitage as a valid lifestyle.

I have limited my list to 25 things because I know you’re busy, too. Who has time to read 26 things?!? Slackers! That’s who! (I’m considerate like that.) This list could easily have 100 things.

I have one husband and two children. A lot of my busy is for them and/or because of them. I know I’m not the only one delivering the occasional lunch to school, but waiting for nearly 30 minutes for a kid to come and fetch it might be a uniquely me experience. (This week. Grr. I was so annoyed. Totally learned a new thing, though. Apparently, High School lets out at 12:30 for lunch. Mmhm. It’s nearly the end of November, you’d think maybe someone might have mentioned that by now, but you’d be wrong.)

Anyhoo …

Life, right?

So, before I can think myself out of hitting publish I’m going to hit publish.

How has your Fall been? Are you also suffering from the B word?

How are you handling the news of the world?

Do you have a surefire remedy for wanting/not wanting simultaneously to do ALL the things?

Feel free to mull those questions over (and to post answers in the comment section!) while enjoying one of my favourite busy day mindworms.

My Current Mindworm {A Semi-Regular Series} : Ain’t It Fun (Paramore)

Paramore, Ain' It Fun, living in the real world, the real world, happy music

love this song!

Every time I hear it I get happy. It’s a perfectly catchy pop song with just the right amount of sass. LOVE!

The video is pretty interesting, too. Check out all the ridiculous world records Paramore broke while filming it. Isn’t that hilarious? There’s bonus footage of each record being broken. You have to see it to believe it. Silly! (And you know I love me some silly!)

I am also sharing this right this minute because I am thinking about my friend Sarah (HI SARAH!) who is diving into the (so-called) real world today. GO, mamma! Go!

You got this!

I hope this makes you smile. Then I hope it goes into regular rotation on your Happy Music playlist because it totally is happy music. Right?

I think so!

Do you have a Happy Music playlist?

I definitely have a running list of songs that will always make me smile, giggle, then laugh, burst out into song, and whip up a kitchen dance party like nobody’s business.

Maybe it’s time to add a new tab up there labeled “Happy Music”. What do you think? (Fully aware that music posts don’t bring a lot of traffic. Don’t care. I care to share because I care. If one person is inspired to dance in the kitchen, then yay!)

What’s your mindworm today?

Birds and Fudge and Cheese and Flowers or Random Tuesday: The “Why The Heck Not!” Edition

Here is a picture of a Blue Jay.

blue_jay_glamour Cornell Lab of Ornithology all about birds jays blue jay Cyanocitta cristata

I did not take this picture because the very noisy Blue Jay that has been visiting my patio is also suuuuuper paranoid and I have yet to be able to capture his image. I found this very pretty photo here. I really enjoy birds and I absolutely love the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. It is an endless source of information and they are always doing good things for birds and the environment.

Here is another picture of a Blue Jay.

Roberto Alomar blue jays baseball blue jay

Because Random Tuesday. That’s why! Roberto Alomar had his number (12) retired back in 2011. He was an excellent baseball player and as far as I can tell an upstanding gentleman. I wonder what he is up to in 2016.

2016 may be remembered (at least by some members of my family) as the Summer of Fudge. Hoo boy! We ate more fudge this summer than we did all year! This is not a good thing, but in the moment it was glorious. Here’s a peek at a wee sampling. We bought these two at the Anne of Green Gables Chocolates inside Avonlea Village in Cavendish, Prince Edward Island. If you head into Charlottetown, PEI, you can watch them making some of the confections through big windows from inside the shop. (Then you’ll very likely need to purchase some “COW Chips”. Consider this fair warning.)

Brown Sugar Fudge ann of green gables chocolates PEI chocolate fudge anne of green gables chocolates PEI

We also had fudge purchased at the PEI Preserve Company. I think it was made by the New Glasgow Candy Company (though there’s no remaining evidence to serve as proof) and the flavour was Turtle Delight. As you can imagine it was – wait for it – delightful.

How do you feel about cheese curds? I mean real, honest-to-goodness, full fat, squeaky, cheese curds. They’re awesome right? We used to buy St. Albert’s when we lived in Ottawa and they were great. This summer my brother had some he purchased at Costco (I presume, as the bag was pretty large) and they were delicious and very real. I’m going to have to get the details before I go next time. Hmm. Or should I not get the details? Cheese can be dangerous. Though, soon it will be playing a substantial role in meal prep ’round here. Actually, as it is Taco Tuesday (but we skipped tacos tonight) there’s usually at least two kinds of shredded cheese on the go. Mmm. Cheese.

Speaking of cheese, do you get all caught up in changing your decor over from Summer to Fall? (Stay with me. This is going somewhere.) (Plus, hello! Random Tuesday!) Do you have a set idea of what constitutes Fall decor? Are you mad about Mums or is Mum the word where your personal plans lie? I ask because I love Fall Mums, (I have written about them here. Several times, apparently.), but it has recently been brought to my attention that some people loathe them. They are cliché and played out as far as some of my Mum friends (that’s mother Mum, not plant Mum) are concerned. They’d rather have nothing than a Fall Mum. I can understand not loving a street full of the same flowers, but I find them to be very happy making. Especially the gigantic ones I get (in yellow, usually) from Costco. (Although, to be honest, I saw one today when I was there and it was looking a little long in the tooth. Mind you, I was practically running through the aisles to get to the checkout to buy movie passes. Jumpins! Costco needs a new system for buying things like passes. * eye twitch * Don’t get me started. That’s an entire (rant filled) post waiting to happen.) Meanwhile, my friend has gotten into my head and now I am not sure I want Mums. Well, I do, but maybe not only Mums.

As luck would have it Kent has sunflowers in planters that basically look like a live bouquet, so maybe I’ll get a couple of those instead.

What do you keep growing in and around your space when Autumn weather arrives?

I asked Thing 2 to say the first and most random thing that popped into her head this morning and she exclaimed, “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!” with such glee that I would be remiss to not share this gem right this minute.

Did you hear that Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke will have cameos in a new reboot of Mary Poppins? True story.

I liked this Guacamole 101 recipe. Avocados really are a wonderful fruit. They’re loaded with fibre and chock full of good, healthy fat. I vow to add more avocado to my diet. Guacamole ought to be its own food group. Wouldn’t you agree?

We took the Things to see The Secret Life of Pets this evening. Have you seen it? Here’s a Kevin Hart teaser.

He was perfect as Snowball.

Before the movie we saw a preview for “Sing”. I definitely want to see this one!

It looks cute and I love the premise.

So … how did I do?

Is this random enough for a Random Tuesday?

SpaghettiOs! <– That’s Thing 2’s final injection of random

Author! Author!

author life direction choices beginning end chapter

Do you believe this? Are you the author of your life? Am the author of mine?

I love my sign. I really do. I want to believe what it tells me.

It hangs above my desk in the corner of our bedroom where I have tried to carve out a small space to call my own and in which I try to work.

Currently my desk is covered in piles. It is ridiculous. It is barely visible.

I guess it is time for me to end this chapter and decide how the new one begins.

Do you have anything motivational in your work space?

Is it working?

My Current Mindworm {A Semi-Regular Series} : Spirits (The Strumbellas)

It’s been a while since I had a really sticky mindworm and even longer since I shared one here, but I have one and – as is outlined in the manifesto – it must be shared.

Can you say catchy tune? I can and have been saying it about this song by The Strumbellas.

I love it.

I cannot stop singing it!

I’ve got songs in my head and they won’t go. Strumbellas in my head and they won’t go! So good! I am loving this band.

What do you think?

Do you like it? Do you know what it’s about? Does it matter?

Are you an I-must-know-the-exact-meaning-of-these-lyrics kind of person or an I-like-the-beat-I-wouldn’t-buy-it-but-I’d-definitely-borrow-it-from-a-friend kind of person?

Tell me about your current mindworms?

Summer Snack: KISS Edition

white chocolate chocolate dipped strawberries sweet

We just had an awesome and delicious snack and I am not exaggerating one bit when I tell you the kids can make it themselves. I whipped it up this time, but next time they’re on their own. Frankly, it’s just as well. I don’t think I can be trusted all alone with its deliciousness.

Have I piqued your interest? Are you curious? Are you sitting on the edge of your seat?

Well, okay then. I’ll tell you what our scrumptious afternoon snack was today. It was so simple you might just think I am silly for blogging about it. Then again you didn’t think to have this today, did you? Oh ho ho! I’ve got you there, haven’t I?

Okay, okay. Enough with the suspense already!

We had juicy, fresh, local strawberries dipped in white chocolate. Ta daa!

So easy! Right?

Here’s what I did.

Pick or buy fresh local strawberries. Ours were bought, but most definitely local and oh so fresh.

Clean them and remove any that might be iffy or mushy or underripe. Taste test 17 just to be sure.

Get some good quality, white chocolate. Today we used Baker’s, but white chocolate chips, white chocolate melting wafers, white chocolate chunks from your bulk food store, etc., would all work fine.

Break the chocolate into individual squares. Or if using larger blocks chop it up using a serrated edge knife. This will help it melt faster and also will give you a chance to taste test the chocolate to make sure it hasn’t gone bad. It hasn’t. Taste it anyway. You know, just in case.

Place the chocolate in a microwave safe bowl. I used one of my trusty little square dip bowls from President’s Choice. (More on those later. It’s a very short love story.)

Pop the chocolate into the microwave for 30 seconds. Stir gently. You are not trying to whip it up, really, you want smooth, bubble-free, shiny chocolate. Place back in microwave for 10 seconds. Stir. This may be enough time, but if you need more melting time, be sure to use only 10 second intervals because you don’t want the chocolate to seize or burn. That’d be a shame.

Give the chocolate one final gentle stir and place in the centre of a platter.

Fill the platter with your beautiful, clean, fresh, local strawberries and stand back while the wolverines – umm – I mean children dig in!

See?

I bet you’re glad I suggested all that taste testing when you first started this little snack journey, now, aren’t you?

You’re welcome.

25 Happy Things To Think About Right This Minute

It’s Monday and that seems as good a day as any to post something new, doesn’t it? Plus, posting something happy on a Monday just seems kind of rebellious, so I am embracing my inner rebel and making a list of 25 Things in the hopes that sharing a bit of happy might help someone who is feeling the way I was feeling last week. (hint: not at all happy)

So, without further ado, here are 25 Happy Things To Think About Right This Minute. Maybe, don’t think about all 25 at once because we don’t want anyone’s brain to implode with awesomeness, but combining two or three at a time should be alright.

Here’s to happy Mondays!

  1. James Corden singing with pretty much anyone, at all, ever.
  2. The Peeper Frogs that are back and have been making their unmistakable peeps in the evening in Bedford.
  3. Tiny Kitchen cooking videos.
  4. Brand new purple pens.
  5. Finishing your taxes.
  6. Writing an honest-to-goodness old fashioned letter and mailing it.
  7. Being told you have made someone’s day.
  8. Using a favourite coffee mug and then putting it back into retirement to keep it safe.
  9. This kitten, who is obviously seizing the day.cute kitten freedom green grass spring
  10. The fact that your kids will have hours of daylight to play in outside after school this week.
  11. It’s bubble blowing season!
  12. There are only 3 weeks and 6 days until Victoria Day weekend.
  13. There are only 56 days until summer!how many days to summer days til summer
  14. The next occasion that involves cake.
  15. A good plan!
  16. This picture of a teeny bunny.bunny duckies and bunnies
  17. April showers bring May flowers.
  18. The buds beginning to appear on the trees.
  19. Chocolate!
  20. The awesomeness of safe, delicious, drinking water.
  21. Music.
  22. Kindred spirits.
  23. Puppies!
  24. Toasty warm towels straight from the dryer.
  25. Bedtime.

There you have it!

What would you add if this were your list?

Did you have a good Monday?

What made you happy today?

Let me know in the comments if you have a moment to spare.
