Late Night Friday Fun or How to Write a Blog Post in 10 Minutes

blogger, Friday, late night, MacBookPro, How-To, chocolate,

Well, well, well. We made it. Friday at last!

Yes. It’s still Friday. Oh sure, it is just about midnight, but I have vowed to post something new to ye olde blog and that is exactly what I am going to do. Never mind the fact that I have been messing with the space time continuum all week here, there, and everywhere.

What a week! It was good over all, but it felt so long. I had a strong start on Monday, though, and that made all the difference in me surviving a very long week. As opposed to two short weeks in a row. I mean 5 whole school days in a row! Wow! Wait. No. Thing 2 had 5, but Thing 1 only had 4. Plus, as the Mother/Chauffeur, let’s face it, all my weeks are long!

Honestly, this week was a roller coaster. It had me feeling like this on Monday because I finally managed to hit publish.

Tuesday was nice. I made the most amazing tacos for dinner and everyone loved them.

On Wednesday, the rain began.

I was exhausted and couldn’t nap because I am bad at naps. Also, grey rainy days always make me feel so very peckish. Of course, no good ever comes of this.

Thursday was also rainy, but it was an intermittent rain. There were nice little breaks interspersed among the torrential downpours. I had appointments to get to, so I decided to make the most of it.

I was feeling pretty positive on Thursday. I had a positive Parent Teacher interview experience. That is always such a welcome surprise. Thursday was alright.

This was me on Thursday night.

Also this

because balance.

Friday, as usual, arrived just in the nick of time.

My week might best be describes as emotional.

So when I decided that I was going to do as little as possible on Saturday, I most definitely felt like this.

Then I texted my NS BFF and told her I wanted cake.

Because I have a lot of feelings and they are all delicious.

And that is how you write a blog post in 10 minutes.

bows

Now about that cake …

*Full disclosure: This took slightly longer than 10 minutes because Giphy is an internet rabbit hole if ever there was one. Yay, Giphy.

Wordless WEdnesday : Announcing That I Am a #WEFamilies Ambassador (Right Out Loud)

WE ME to WE #WEFamilies WE Families Ambassador WE Movement

You may have noticed a little badge down and to the right on my blog. See it there? The one with #WEFamilies on it. Or maybe you never noticed at all. Perhaps you only ever use your iThing and you don’t see anything that resides in the sidebar. You can turn your phone sideways and it should magically appear! (Don’t you love learning new things? I’m a giver! Tee hee hee.)

I’m so excited to announce that I am a WE Families Ambassador!

I decided that today was as good a day as any to announce that, here. I have been sharing all things WE for years now, but I was asked to be a WE Families Ambassador late in November 2016, just before WE Day Atlantic.

Obviously, I said yes.

Then life went a bit sideways. As life is known to do. Sometimes that happens, right? I know you know exactly what I mean.

That being said, I have been working behind the scenes here, (there, and everywhere) and decided that I am going to make WEdnesday* (wordless and/or wordy) a semi-regular thing. Out in the open. See? Right out loud!

I won’t always have a WEdnesday post, but sometimes I will and when I do I will share some of the cool things WE are up to with a #WEFamilies twist.

Now, before this so-called (and lets be honest “wordless” is a pretty glaringly obvious misnomer now) Wordless WEdnesday post gets any longer I am going to hit publish!

I hope this Wordless (Hah!) WEdnesday made you smile and I also hope you will follow along as WE do our best to make the world a better place one action at a time.

I have always loved this Hemingway quote.

Never mistake motion for action.

Honestly, these days I find it is especially fitting. After all, that is what #WEFamilies are all about.

*See what I did there?

Motivation Monday {Silly Saves Me Edition}

mock motivation motivational poster seagulls nature inspirational quote

It will come as a surprise to no one that I have been having a bit of trouble feeling motivated lately, but this morning I am feeling determined to be the one in control of my feelings – and some other stuff, too. Motivation has come home and, much like the prodigal son, I will embrace it and feed it and give it its old room back, and cherish it like never before in hopes that my appreciation for its return will have some big returns for me! Yay, motivation!

This is how I operate apparently, so I had better learn to live with it*, right?

I am not leaving this laptop without hitting publish. (Because motivation makes me make promises to myself and motivation also makes me keep those promises. Isn’t motivation rad, you guys?)

This will be an extremely short post, but I feel like I am in a rip-the-band-aid-off sit’i’ation and I just have to hit publish. This will hurt me more than it will hurt you. Believe me.

My point is, I have so much to say and so many ideas and they have just been stagnating, or being forgotten – because of course I won’t remember that great post idea if I don’t have a pen (mine!) and paper (also, mine!) to write it down in a way that will make sense to me at a later more convenient time! I am busy, distracted, worried for the world. Kids come with outside obligations that require my attention. I have to make dinner. I haven’t had coffee yet… You know? ALL the things that everyone faces pretty much every day and somehow manages to live with.

Yeah. When the normal stuff of life gets in the way of happy-go-lucky  I am not – wait for it – happy-go-lucky! I do not like that.

So I am fixing it little by little and right about now, just after I rip off this bandaid, I will have fixed it just a little bit more.

Thank you for your patience and sense of humour.

I am happy you stuck around.

My tens of readers are actually extremely important to me. I appreciate you.

So, while I work out the rest of my day, this week, this month, an editorial calendar that will bring me back here more often, and my entire life going forward**, I will leave you with this beautiful motivational quote.

mock motivation motivational poster seagulls nature inspirational quote

You can tell it is inspirational*** because it is a nature photo and there are words on it.

That’s all it takes, right? 😉

How are you holding up? No really. I’m asking. How’s your motivation these days? I know I am not the only one who feels the way I do.

What do you do every day, week or month to keep your motivation revved up? What do you do to spark it if ever it drops?

You should know that Thing 2 just walked in my room *juuuust as I started that second sentence with pen (mine!) and paper (math test) saying, “Sign.”. I replied, “You’re interrupting me.” and explained further, “If you enter my room and see me very obviously trying to do something with this (points to face) look on my face, please do not make demands. Leave your things for now and I’ll sign them momentarily, but going forward this is not ok.”

So, I’d like my adulting sticker and a gold star, now, please and thank you.

**No pressure.

My Current Mindworm {A Semi-Regular Series} : Cheap Thrills (Sia ft. Sean Paul)

sia-furler-010

Come on, come on, turn the radio on
It’s Friday night and it won’t be long
Gotta do my hair, put my make-up on
It’s Friday night and it won’t be long ’til I

Hit the dancefloor
Hit the dancefloor
I got all I need
No I ain’t got cash
I ain’t got cash
But I got you baby

Is that perfect or what?

I cannot get enough of Sia. I have been a fan for quite some time. I didn’t discover her swinging from a chanelie-eer.. from a chandelie-eeeeer … either.

The first time I heard Sia was when I heard this song.

That was a long time ago. Thing 2 was about 2. Itty bitty compared to now. I loved Sia’s voice instantly and then I saw the video and was in awe. A true artist in every sense of the word. That is what I felt I was seeing and hearing.

The word artist gets tossed around rather haphazardly these days, I think. Much like the words sexy and basically, it is overused. But I digress.

My point is Sia is amazing and I have been enjoying her music for years, but now my kids are totally loving her, too, and that makes me extra happy. Yay!

So, without further ado, I give you the video for the song we are loving and listening to lots lately. The song is fabulous and fun and the video is highly enjoyable. If you decide to play it, please actually sit (or stand, but definitely stay!) long enough to watch until the end. It’s worth your time. I promise. I’ve watched it at least three times while writing this (short) post, so you can imagine how many times I have watched it since it was released.

The song is in pretty heavy radio rotation ’round here, too, and we have yet to switch stations to avoid it. A sure sign of a terrific tune! Thing 2 knows all the words and has been heard singing in the backseat of the car during road trips, during breakfast on a daily basis, and/or bursting out in full voice randomly while alone in her room. Yep. It’s a hit!

She will love the video when I show her.

I love that it is a lyric video. That normally bugs me, but this time it is, again, highly enjoyable. I hope you enjoyed it!

So, what songs have you been singing this summer?

What’s your current mindworm?

Go ahead and share it in the comments. If you know me at all, you know I love music and if you share something new to me all the better!

I hope your Friday night has at least a little bit of dancing and maybe even a few cheap thrills.

Summer Snack: KISS Edition

white chocolate chocolate dipped strawberries sweet

We just had an awesome and delicious snack and I am not exaggerating one bit when I tell you the kids can make it themselves. I whipped it up this time, but next time they’re on their own. Frankly, it’s just as well. I don’t think I can be trusted all alone with its deliciousness.

Have I piqued your interest? Are you curious? Are you sitting on the edge of your seat?

Well, okay then. I’ll tell you what our scrumptious afternoon snack was today. It was so simple you might just think I am silly for blogging about it. Then again you didn’t think to have this today, did you? Oh ho ho! I’ve got you there, haven’t I?

Okay, okay. Enough with the suspense already!

We had juicy, fresh, local strawberries dipped in white chocolate. Ta daa!

So easy! Right?

Here’s what I did.

Pick or buy fresh local strawberries. Ours were bought, but most definitely local and oh so fresh.

Clean them and remove any that might be iffy or mushy or underripe. Taste test 17 just to be sure.

Get some good quality, white chocolate. Today we used Baker’s, but white chocolate chips, white chocolate melting wafers, white chocolate chunks from your bulk food store, etc., would all work fine.

Break the chocolate into individual squares. Or if using larger blocks chop it up using a serrated edge knife. This will help it melt faster and also will give you a chance to taste test the chocolate to make sure it hasn’t gone bad. It hasn’t. Taste it anyway. You know, just in case.

Place the chocolate in a microwave safe bowl. I used one of my trusty little square dip bowls from President’s Choice. (More on those later. It’s a very short love story.)

Pop the chocolate into the microwave for 30 seconds. Stir gently. You are not trying to whip it up, really, you want smooth, bubble-free, shiny chocolate. Place back in microwave for 10 seconds. Stir. This may be enough time, but if you need more melting time, be sure to use only 10 second intervals because you don’t want the chocolate to seize or burn. That’d be a shame.

Give the chocolate one final gentle stir and place in the centre of a platter.

Fill the platter with your beautiful, clean, fresh, local strawberries and stand back while the wolverines – umm – I mean children dig in!

See?

I bet you’re glad I suggested all that taste testing when you first started this little snack journey, now, aren’t you?

You’re welcome.

Five (more) Fun Facts For (the last) Friday (in February)

Friday facts fun facts kindness

I am so happy today is Friday.

This week has been so weird. I didn’t know what day it was, we had some crazy windy and rainy weather, and I was working really hard on being healthier and more productive.

I was halfway through Thursday when it was brought to my attention that it was, in fact, Wednesday. Blarg. Don’t you just hate it when that happens? That set off a whole well-if-today-isn’t-Thursday-then-that-means-tomorrow-isn’t-Friday general malaise and it went downhill from there.

The upside of the confusion was that I gained a whole day. The downside, obviously, is the exact same thing.

All in all, it was a good week. It was 14 degrees Celsius on the Thursday that was really Wednesday. In February. In Canada! It also rained an insane amount overnight Wednesday into Thursday with high winds and it was a hard wake up for early band. We made it, mind you.

The rainy day was dreamy in a way though and after work and school when we’d all normally be doing typical after work and school stuff – like making dinner – we all fell asleep! That hasn’t happened in a very long time. I guess we needed a little rest. It was kind of nice, actually. I am a terrible napper, so it was nice to snuggle with Thing 2 on the couch for a little while. The fact that I zonked out and actually slept was awesome. Then I made dinner while everyone else snoozed.

Anyhoo …

Before Friday becomes Saturday (I have had enough of days becoming other days for one week!), I give you five fun facts for Friday.

  1. I am a February baby. (My birthday happened earlier this month.) If I were a Leap Year Baby*, I would be celebrating only my 12th birthday this year. I think that is so fun! If I were a Leap Year Baby, I like to think I would have fun celebrations every four years. Wouldn’t that be fun?

  2. I have a lot of friends who are Valentine’s Day babies! Seriously, it’s uncanny. I can think of at least 6 people right off the top of my head (without a Facebook Birthday reminder or anything). Remarkable!

  3. I have been on a real spinach kick lately. Is that weird or what? I mean, who craves spinach? (This is the point where I hope at least one of you is reading in George Costanza’s mother’s – or Estelle Costanza’s -voice) What kind of person craves spinach? Well, I know some people do. Am I becoming the kind of person who craves spinach? Where will it end? Will you soon find me in the grocery store caressing the kale,  looking to get my Freekeh on? Well, now I’ve gone too far, haven’t I? Besides, Freekeh is actually quite gluten full as it is made from roasted green wheat. Whew! That was a close one.

  4. Thing 2 was down with a very yucky virus for a full week. The poor thing! She was sick for Valentine’s Day and Heritage Day.** She doesn’t get sick very often (thank goodness), but when she does it always seems to fall on a special day. She had to miss out on some fun and so we all followed suit and had a very low key Valentine’s Day and spent our Heritage Day at home.

  5. I have a really good Doctor. (I got to see her today because Thing 1 had a check up.) She is kind and funny. She is smart and always has a minute to spare to be nice to my kids – and to me. I had some stuff to deal with and I thought I’d have to make an appointment next week when I got a chance, but after my son’s stuff was squared away, she turned to me to ask, “And you? How are you?”. It was unexpected and so cool of her, really. I tried to deflect any concern and said I’d be back, but she basically said, “We are here now. Let’s talk.”

It sometimes feels like no one cares in this world, but we can’t let that be the norm. We really have to seek out as much good as possible. It sure is nice when the good is present during stressful times. I really appreciate kindness.

Don’t you?

*Also known as Leaplings. How cute is that?

**That’s Family Day to some of you. The February, Monday holiday. In Nova Scotia this year it was Joseph Howe Day.

Five Worthy Causes For Your Kind Consideration On Giving Tuesday

Today is Giving Tuesday.

What’s Giving Tuesday?

Well think of it as the Black Friday (or Cyber Monday) of charity.

Giving Tuesday is like “opening day of the giving season.”

It is a day to think about others and to take advantage of a doubling of your dollars because many charitable organizations have a “matching” sponsor. This means that you literally double your donation in some cases.

Give $20 and your organization receives $40.

Donate $50 and voila $100 goes to your favourite fund.

How cool is that?

You can learn more about Giving Tuesday here (please do!) but I want to quickly share with you a handful of my favourite organizations, in case you want to make a donation before midnight!

Free The Children Free The Children is the brainchild of Craig and Marc Keilburger and you can read all about how they founded this amazing organization and the subsequent We, Me To We, and We Day awesomeness here.

David Suzuki Foundation – I have been a fan of David Suzuki for as long as I can remember. A few years back, he actually stepped down as the head of his own foundation to take attention away from his own struggles with a government that seemed determined to paint him as a radical. Oh! He’s radical alright! Radically awesome!

World Wildlife Foundation (Canada) – I hope you know about WWF Canada, for the love of our planet. This organization is famous for its symbolic wildlife adoptions (which make fabulous gifts for Things of all ages), Earth Hour, and many other initiatives. I wear my feelings for WWF Canada on my sleeve and I make no apologies for it. I wrote a guest blog way back when. I have written about it here on my blog and also here. We have one home. It’s the planet we live on. It’s time to show it the respect it deserves, isn’t it?

Because I Am A Girl – I am! You might be. Thing 2 is. My sister is. My mother, too. You either are one, have one or were made by one. Girls matter! Educating girls improves the lives of everyone. BIAAG Canada is taking this knowledge and sharing it around the world. You may have heard about their Pink Lemonade Stands and their using small actions to drive big change initiatives. How wonderful! We are big fans and my face goes all gigantic grin every time Thing 2 emerges from her room in the morning sporting her pink BIAAG T-shirt. “Girls’ rights are human rights.” Your darn right they are!

BIAAG, Thing 2,

Malala Fund – Oh Malala! What a wonderful human being! If ever there was a person with a higher purpose than she ever could have known, it is Malala Yousafzai. Malala is an education activist and a Nobel Peace Prize recipient. She was in school when the call came that she had won. She told her teacher she would finish her studies for the day. Malala is walking the talk. I am a fan. Her book is beautiful, the children’s adaptation is great, and now there is even a movie!

So, whether you donate, share, learn or do some small act of kindness today you have taken part in Giving Tuesday and you have made a difference.

What you do matters.

I, for one, appreciate it.

Thank you!
